How Sacred Circle Dance Began
The original Sacred Dance repertoire came from the work of Professor Bernard Wosien, a German ballet instructor and master teacher at Munich University. He traveled Europe extensively, collecting dances and music, referring to his work as "heilige Tanze" or the highest or holy form of dance, which evolved into "Sacred Dance."
Prof. Wosien brought Sacred Dance to the Findhorn Community (an international spiritual community in north Scotland) in 1975 where it has been kept alive, taught and expanded. Sacred Dance continues to be shared within the community as a means of relaxation, celebration and attunement with the rhythms of the group and the Cycles of Nature, as well as the essence of universal spirituality, including all cultures and religions throughout history.
Weekly Dance Sessions
Dances are taught every week so that no experience is necessary to join the dance. The emphasis is on the spirirt of the dance rather than on form or correctness. The Plymouth dance facilitatators learn new dances from many different cultures and traditions annually at the New England dance camp held in Lebanon, New York as well as at periodic workshops throughout the year. Their collection now includes some 400 dances from many parts of the world ranging from the lively to the meditative. The weekly dance sessions are structured to include varied selections.
Special Celebrations
Dances are also held to celebrate the earth holidays including winter and summer solstices and fall and spring equinoxes. In addition, dances are scheduled to honor special events such as the coming of age of young women and ethnic holidays. For more information about the dance or about offering dance to your group or organization, call Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 536-8908.
